WNBL's search for tenth team

WNBL's search for tenth team

Tuesday, August 19, 2025

With Tasmania now confirmed as the home of the ninth WNBL team, the league is now actively looking for its tenth franchise.

Women’s basketball is experiencing unprecedented growth across the world. The WNBA is breaking attendance records, the Australian Opals have made history by winning their first-ever gold Medal in the 2025 FIBA Women’s Asia Cup, and grassroots participation here in Australia is at an all-time high.

Basketball is now one of the country’s most popular sports with one in five girls ages 5-14 playing our game, making this the right time to expand the league’s footprint and create more opportunities for the next generation of athletes to chase their dreams.

With the 2032 Brisbane Olympics firmly on the horizon, seeing the WNBL return to metro Queensland would give basketball the momentum it needs to see the Opals and Boomers take home gold.

WNBL CEO Jennie Sager said the interest in women’s basketball has never been stronger.

“There is significant interest from investors and stakeholders who are excited by the growth they are seeing in women’s basketball and it’s a powerful reminder that the appetite for the game has never been stronger,” said Sager.

“We’re not just looking for a new team – we're looking for a partner who will help us build a league that is strong, sustainable and a source of pride for decades to come.”

“A tenth team means more court time for elite players, more pathways for the stars of tomorrow, and more moments that inspire young girls to pick up a basketball and know they have a place in our sport."

The move comes following increased investment in the WNBL. Since April, the league has negotiated a landmark Collective Bargaining Agreement – delivering better pay, stronger conditions, and great security for players. The WNBL has also increased investment in broadcast, media, and marketing to ensure the clubs and athletes are front and centre.

Expressions of Interest are now officially open to prospective owners, organisations, stakeholders and investors with a rare opportunity to join on of the fastest growing professional women’s sports leagues in the world.
