Bullets guard Javon Freeman-Liberty has squashed exit rumours and committed himself to the club for the NBL26 season.
Electric Brisbane Bullets guard Javon Freeman-Liberty has squashed rumours that he is homesick and on the verge of leaving the NBL.
In an interview with CODE Sports, the Chicago-product, who tallied 17 points, six rebounds and five assists during Brisbane’s opening round win against New Zealand, declared his committed to the Bullets.
“I’ve heard the talk, but I came to Brisbane to hoop, to win games with my teammates, and that’s exactly where my focus is,” former Toronto Raptor Freeman-Liberty said to CODE Sports.
“My head’s not in the rumours, it’s on the court. I came here to compete and represent the Bullets, and that’s where all my energy is right now.”
The home sick claims were also denied by Bullets CEO Malcolm Watts.
“Javon is dedicated, committed, a great teammate and there have been no indications that he wants to leave the club. We can’t fault him and couldn’t be happier with him,” Watts said to CODE Sports.
NBL expert Pete Hooley, who called the 25-year-old a ‘stud’ of a player, also echoed these sentiments on NBL Overtime and via his social channels.
“He [Freeman-Liberty] is enjoying Brisbane so far and has a good mate with him. But this has been something he’s struggled with in the past, lasting two games in Turkey,” Hooley said.
“The Bullets knew this and are helping him be comfortable and hopefully thrive here.
“But something like this isn’t an overnight fix when you’re a family person/homebody.
“He clearly wants to make it work, otherwise he wouldn’t have taken the leap on the first place - [he's got a] big career still ahead.”
Freeman-Liberty and his undefeated Bullets travel to the Cairns Convention Centre on Friday to take on the Taipans, in the first Sunshine Stoush of the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 season.
The round two fixture tips off at 7.30pm AEST via ESPN.
