The crafty Foxwell: Phoenix young gun catches fire on big stage

South East Melbourne Phoenix guard Owen Foxwell is making waves at the FIBA Asia Cup, starring for the Boomers and showing why he’s set for a breakout NBL26 season.
While the Boomers continued to dominate in the FIBA Asia Cup, South East Melbourne Phoenix guard Owen Foxwell took another big stride in his developing career.
“I’ve said this before, but belief in yourself travels,” Damon Lowery said on NBL Now.
“He’s the kind of guy ... it doesn’t matter who he’s playing against. Remember when he first came into the league… he’s guarding Bryce Cotton, making Bryce have to work for his points and we’re thinking to ourselves, does this guy realise how young he is?”
Foxwell, Australia’s starting point guard for the entire tournament, finished with 15 points and led the team with a +23 in the plus/minus category.
“His belief travels,” Lowery doubled down.
“He’s playing for the Boomers, big stage, Asia Cup, Saudi Arabia … it don’t matter. He’s gonna come out there and he’s gonna take his shots.
“He even hit a floater a la Derrick Rose, from the foul line and I said okay 'Foxy, calm down'.”
At just 21 years of age and only a few seasons into his professional career, Foxwell is quickly emerging as one of the league’s brightest young talents.
With the Phoenix, he has steadily improved each year, doubling his scoring average season after season. Last year, he posted a career-high 8 points per game, in just 16 minutes of action.
Head coach Josh King has previously described him as “a Josh King type of guy,” a sign that Phoenix fans can expect to see even more of the confident young guard when NBL26 tips off.
