Sold on the NBL: Why Bleijenbergh made the move

“I was excited straight away. I said, ‘Let’s get it done'."
Vrenz Bleijenbergh turned down multiple European offers before signing with the South East Melbourne Phoenix, confirming the chance to play in the NBL was the ultimate drawcard.
The 24-year-old spent the past two seasons in Turkey, where his strong performances drew interest from clubs across the globe. But when the opportunity to head to Australia came, it was an instant yes.
“I was flying out on vacation when my agent called as I landed. He said we’ve got a job in Australia,” Bleijenbergh told Phoenix Media. “I was excited straight away. I said, ‘Let’s get it done.’ It’s a beautiful opportunity. A beautiful experience.”
At 6'10", Bleijenbergh leans on his versatility and playmaking instincts, qualities he believes will be key to making an impact in his new environment.
In his most recent season with Merkezefendi, he averaged 11.6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.1 steals and 1 block per game, showcasing his ability to contribute across the board.
“I’m really good with the ball in my hands, creating for my teammates or for myself,” he said. “That’s my biggest strength: being versatile, doing whatever the team needs.”
The combo forward drew plenty of praise from the club this week.
“Vrenz brings great size, athleticism, and strong playmaking. He can operate in pick and roll as a ball handler, rebound and go, and can both shoot and get to the rim,” General Manager Simon Mitchell said.
South East Melbourne will open their NBL26 campaign at home on September 20, when they host the Cairns Taipans.
