Ili cleared and confident

After battling multiple concussions since 2022, Melbourne United star Shea Ili has been cleared to return and is ready to make a strong impact in NBL26, with confidence restored and his defensive edge intact.
Melbourne United star Shea Ili says he’s thrilled to finally be back on court after getting the all-clear to return from concussion symptoms.
The 32-year-old has battled a string of concussions since 2022, but says a specialist’s clearance has restored his confidence and passion for the game.
Ili was sidelined for the final three games of the NBL25 Championship Series after copping an accidental elbow in Game 2, followed by a training setback in the NZNBL in May.
“It (concussion) is a scary topic so I’m just happy that the reports were all good and I can play again and put it behind myself,” Ili told Code Sports.
“It will still be in the back of my mind but I’m just going to go out there and play.”
The back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year has had a history of head knocks, but insists he won’t alter his aggressive, hard-nosed style of play.
The NBL has strict concussion protocols, with a requirement for players to removal from play for any suspected concussion. Players must be assessed by medical professionals and can’t return to play until cleared by a doctor.
The league’s return-to-play program involves multiple stages, ensuring a player’s complete recovery before taking the court again.
