Owen Foxwell is pushing for the Phoenix starting point guard role as he takes on more playmaking and leadership in NBL26.

After a massive 12 months, which included strong performances during the Hungry Jack’s NBL25 season and at the FIBA Asia Cup with the Australian Boomers, all signs are pointing to a breakout campaign for South East Melbourne’s Owen Foxwell.

The biggest factor in that is Phoenix coach Josh King potentially handing Foxwell the starting point guard position, a role which he filled on seven occasions last season.

“[This season] I know I’m going to be taking on a bigger playmaking role,” said Foxwell, who is entering his fifth season in the Heartland, during the club's media availability on Wednesday.

“I don’t want to define myself as just that spark-plug, but rather being that guy who can run a team at the highest level, for 20 to 30 minutes a game.

“I had a great conversation with Jordi [Hunter] about the importance of making sure everyone has a heartbeat on the floor, making sure everyone is involved, making sure everyone feels engaged in the game.

“That’s the most important thing for a point guard, and I really want that starting role.”

The 22-year-old has slowly upped his production in four years at the Phoenix, playing a little over 16 minutes a game in NBL25.

Foxwell and his Phoenix host Cairns at John Cain Arena on Saturday from 5.30pm AEST - broadcast live on ESPN.
