Why Will Magnay is living the dream as Boomers captain

Will Magnay shares his journey to becoming Boomers captain at the FIBA Asia Cup, reflecting on the pride and honour of leading Australia on the international stage.
It was a decision that came with some hesitation, but one Will Magnay will always be grateful for - the opportunity to captain his country at the FIBA Asia Cup.
The Tasmania JackJumpers big man is leading the Australian Boomers in Saudi Arabia and says it ranks among his proudest moments.
“I actually told Capes (Adam Caporn) ‘no’, when he first asked me,” Magnay revealed in the post-game press conference on Wednesday. “About an hour or two later I text him ‘no, I’m in’.
“Putting on a jersey with your country’s name on it and representing your family on the back, there’s no greater honour in basketball and sport.”
The 27-year-old has been a standout at the FIBA Asia Cup, guiding the Boomers to an unbeaten run across four games.
He excelled in particular against Qatar and the Philippines in the last two games, earning Player of the Match honours in the Quarter-Final victory.
For the NBL star, leading his team to the Final would be a remarkable achievement, with only one match against a strong Iranian side standing between Australia and a shot at glory.
“Being able to go out there and represent my country and do my best for my family and my friends the right way, as many times as I can in my career, I’m going to keep putting my hand up to do it,” Magnay said.
“The honour is huge always to represent your country and to be a captain of it too is a big honour for me.”
Australia faces Iran on Saturday, Australian time, with full schedule details yet to be released.
