Backed in and out to deliver

Will Hickey is embracing his expanded role with the Illawarra Hawks, stepping up as the starting point guard after a breakout year and aiming to guide the reigning champions toward back-to-back NBL titles.
Illawarra Hawks star Will Hickey says he’s determined to repay coach Justin Tatum’s “trust”, embracing the challenge of stepping up as the team's starting point guard.
Earlier this week, Tatum praised Hickey for earning the opportunity to “lead our team” after a whirlwind 12 months in which he starred in the Hawks’ history-making Championship, competed at the NBA Summer League, and played a pivotal role in the Australian Boomers’ FIBA Asia Cup triumph.
"JT's 100 per cent backing gives me confidence," Hickey told The Illawarra Mercury.
"I'm just out here ready to prove to him and everybody else in the club that you can trust me with that responsibility."
The Hawks have secured JaQuori McLaughlin as their import point guard, a dynamic addition expected to inject energy and spark off the bench.
Hickey, meanwhile, has cemented his starting role through relentless work ethic and determination to improve.
That edge was evident at the CODE Sports NBL Blitz, where his hunger stood out, diving for loose balls, pressuring opponents, and setting the tone defensively.
Keen to drive the Hawks toward back-to-back titles, Hickey says he’s energised by the arrival of experienced new faces at the club.
JaVale McGee, a three-time NBA champion, and Jonah Bolden join Illawarra’s roster, adding significant size and length.
"It's exciting to bring guys of their calibre to our club," Hickey continued. "They're ultimate professionals who will enhance our group. We are just looking to make another historic run, put all our eggs in one basket, and they're here and ready to do that too.”
The Hawks are set to play at the Intercontinental Cup in Singapore from September 18-21, before opening their Hungry Jack’s NBL Season against Tasmania on September 27.R
