The Cairns Taipans’ latest signing, Jack McVeigh, impressed at the FIBA Asia Cup with a dominant display against Korea.

Jack McVeigh’s “almost unstoppable” stretch of form offers plenty of reason for optimism in Cairns ahead of NBL26.

The Taipans announced his high-profile signing on Tuesday, and McVeigh wasted no time showing why with a strong first-up performance at the FIBA Asia Cup.

The 29-year-old traded blows with Sydney Kings star Jaylin Galloway (four-of-five), going five-of-seven from three-point territory in the Boomers’ big win over Korea.

“He is right now in a different... space. Mentality. But it's not just one month or two. He's just become this incredible player that he always knew that he was going to be,” Pete Hooley said on NBL Now.

“And he's almost unstoppable.”

"He can score from every single level. You cut him off, he's got the spin, the fadeaway, the one-legged Dirk shots,” Damon Lowery continued.

“He's shooting the Klay Thompson threes now. He doesn't even have to bring the ball down below his chin. Catch it, shoot it."

"He hit five triples. The only one he missed was on his arse. I thought that was going to go in too."

McVeigh poured in 20 points in Australia’s 36-point win, showing he’s lost none of the form that earned him Championship Series MVP honours in NBL24 and a stint with the Houston Rockets in the NBA.

“We talk about just playing sky-high confidence. This is who he is right now,” Hooley continued.

“And he is just achieving the ultimate glory in everything he does.

“Keep an eye on the NBL three-point records for the season upcoming. If it's not the makes that might get taken over, the attempts are surely going to be up there.

“He's going to be so fun to watch. Glad to have him back in the NBL.”

“The two-way situation with the Houston Rockets, he was kind of comparing himself. He said he let all that go. He used it as a growth moment. And now he's back to being Jack McVeigh,” Lowery added.

“He had to experience that. He comes back here now, and we all knew he was going to have to do the heavy lifting.

“Jack's fantastic. I feel like he's one of those guys that if you've been around him for a little while, he rubs off on you.

“His spirit is just going to seep through that whole Boomers program.”

Australia will look to build on their strong start to the FIBA Asia Cup when they face Lebanon on Saturday morning at 1am AEST, with the game live on ESPN, Kayo and Disney+.
