The Hungry Jack’s NBL has congratulated NBA and NBL great Andrew Bogut after he announced his retirement today.

NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said: “Andrew Bogut will be remembered as one of Australia’s greatest ever basketballers.

“He was Australia’s first ever number one NBA Draft pick, won an NBA Championship with the Golden State Warriors and played over 700 games in a stellar career in the NBA. He then returned to Australia to play his last two seasons in the NBL with the Sydney Kings where he won the Andrew Gaze Trophy as NBL MVP, was a member of the All NBL First Team and won Best Defensive Player.

“Andrew has also been a great servant to his country with his wonderful service for the Australian Boomers. His decision to come back to Australia and play in the NBL after an incredible career in the NBA was a turning point for our sport and the competition and we are honoured that he made that choice. It was a privilege to have him play such an important part in the League for the last two seasons.

“He showed during his time with the Sydney Kings that he is still one of the most formidable players in the country. His presence, on and off the court, generated a lot of interest in the NBL and Australian basketball more broadly.

“This is the perfect time for us to celebrate and reflect on Andrew's incredible record and lasting legacy. I look forward to seeing which of his many talents and interests he decides to pursue next and I'm happy that he'll be able to spend more time with his wonderful family than he has been able to do until now. Whatever he does, I’m sure he will continue to make a significant contribution to Australian basketball.”

NBL Owner and Executive Chairman Larry Kestelman said: “Andrew has left a lasting memory on the NBA and has been a trailblazer with his move back to the NBL, opening the way for many more Australian NBA players to return home and play out their careers in front of family and friends as part of the NBL.

“I wish Andrew all the best in the future and have no doubt that basketball will always be part of his life and hope he still has the passion to contribute towards the sport in a positive way for its ongoing growth.”
