Cotton, Anthony, Davis get the headlines. Two more stars want in

With the Hungry Jack's NBL27 season set to tip off in just over a week, the spotlight is on one of the most exciting point guard battles the league has ever seen.

With many fans highlighting Cole Anthony, Bryce Cotton and Kendric Davis as the leaders of that battle, Damon Lowery and Derek Rucker believe two other star guards are ready to take control at their new teams.

"As good as he's been, a champion, Milton Doyle … we have not seen the best of him," Lowery said on NBL Now Roundtable, presented by CODE Sports.

"The Jackie way in Tasmania, he was good for that … but the Jackie way is not the Milton Doyle way, it's different.

"He is so versatile. He can play how the coach wants him to play, he's not going to rock the boat."

Having won a title with Tasmania, Doyle now joins the Hawks after another strong individual season at Melbourne United - one Lowery believes didn't get the best out of him.

"Melbourne United last year, he starts, they go 9-0 and then the wheels fall off … you probably know why the wheels fell off … he came off the bench," Lowery added.

"Now Justin Tatum gets him … you're about to see a different version of Milton Doyle and I think it's going to be a massive year for him."

While Doyle is a veteran in the league, Arnas Velicka arrives in Brisbane with a lot of hype around his potential, with a strong resume behind him at just 26 years old.

"He is a tall, strong dude, and he plays with a real European physical swagger that I don't think we have seen before at the position," Rucker said.

"There are some key things I look for when I'm analysing a point guard's influence on a team.

"Not only does he have the courage, the resilience, but he has the in-game intelligence to figure out what he needs to do to change his fortunes and the team's fortunes."

Both guards had strong displays during the CODE Sports NBL Blitz in Bendigo last week and now turn their attention to leading their new teams in Round 1.
