The Head Coach role of Melbourne United has been vacant for less than a week as the club begins its global search for Dean Vickerman’s successor.
ESPN's Olgun Uluc has said that this job will be one of the two most "coveted and intriguing" openings for many coaches around the world.
"It’s the Sydney Kings and Melbourne United,” he said on NBL Marketplace, presented by Paywise.
“They’re the two biggest cities in Australia.”
While United CEO Nick Truelson says that the club will take their time in getting this appointment right, the interest has been paramount early on.
“We’re super excited about the calibre of candidates that we've had inbound,” Truelson said on Monday.
“It's been fantastic since the announcement. People have been reaching out, wanting to say that they would love to put their candidate forward. The great thing is that it's a real global search and we've already had interest from all corners of the globe.”
Vickerman’s potential departure had been a talking point in recent weeks, but now that it is official, the championship-winning coach will make sure that his former club is left in good hands.
“Having Dean as a member of the selection committee is great because he knows this club as well as anyone,” Truelson said.
“He knows what it’s going to take for a coach to not only lead us on the court, but also live our values and engage with our community off the court.”
As United continue that search, Uluc also reported that it may not be the only new addition to the front office in Melbourne.
“I’m told there’s been some consideration being put into a general manager position as well, but it feels like the head coaching position would likely be filled first.”
As it stands, Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, Sam Waardenburg, Dash Daniels, Fabijan Krslovic and Kyle Bowen, as well as the reported signing Joe Ingles, are on United’s roster for the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 Season.
