United and Taipans to Play in Open Air Game

Melbourne United has announced that their hugely popular and fan favourite Open Air Game will return for the 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season.

The event is one of the most highly anticipated on the NBL calendar and sees the John Cain Arena roof slide back to reveal the night sky with the game then held under the stars, creating a truly unique experience.

“It’s great to have the Open Air Game back this season. It’s always one of the most anticipated games on our schedule and something that sets us apart from any other professional basketball league anywhere else in the world,” Hungry Jack’s NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said.

“Fans can come and enjoy the spectacular pre-game and then settle in to watch world-class sports entertainment between Melbourne and the Cairns Taipans.”

The Open Air Game hasn’t been played the past two seasons and will take place in the lead up to Christmas Day on December 23.

“We are always putting the fan experience at the centre of everything we do,” United CEO Nick Truelson said.

“To have the only in-season professional basketball game in the world played in a stadium with an open roof, is something we are really proud of.

“We focus on pushing the boundaries and aim to be the best in everything we do, particularly when it comes to providing the best live sporting experience in Australia.”

The game was previously played on Boxing Day, but that date is unavailable due to another event.

“We feel that the Friday night before Christmas within the school holidays is a great compromise and will be received really well by the fans,” Truelson added.

“After a few years without the Open Air Game, we can’t wait for its return this season.”

The full 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season schedule will be released on Monday, July 25.

Melbourne United and the Cairns Taipans will clash in the Open Air Game on Friday, December 23, at John Cain Arena. Tip-off is 7:30pm and the game will be broadcast live on ESPN via Kayo and Foxtel.
