Breakers big man Charles Bediako is settling in quickly to life in New Zealand.
It's been a whirlwind first week for the 24-year-old at the four-time NBL championship-winning club.
While this marks Bediako's first venture outside of North America in his basketball journey, the Canadian says some familiar faces have made the transition easier, including national team coach Gordon Herbert.
"I know Josiah [Jordan James] from my days playing in college, and I played against Sam [Mennenga] in my Freshman year, so it is great seeing those guys, but everyone has been good," Bediako said.
The import is excited to play alongside all his teammates during the Hungry Jack's NBL27 season. But he's particularly intrigued by the prospect of lining up next to star big man Mennenga.
"I am excited to see what the coaches have for us," he said.
"He (Mennenga) is a great player; he plays inside and out.
"I play above the rim, with high energy, protecting the rim and blocking shots.
"You will see a little bit of playmaking here and there, but overall, I am all about being a great teammate who is all about winning.
"I play well with other bigs, so I look forward to playing with Sam for sure."
Equally as excited is Breakers President of Basketball Operations Dillon Boucher, who knows Bediako and Herbert's prior connection will be a positive for the Auckland-based club.
"Charles has settled in quickly, without question helped by his existing relationship with coach Gordie [Hebert] and an understanding of some of the systems he plays," Boucher said.
"He is going to influence the game at both ends of the floor and already in practice is a threat above the rim.
"As the guys build that chemistry and timing, I think we are going to be in for some fun at Spark Arena for sure."
The Breakers open their Hungry Jack's NBL27 Season on Sunday, September 20 against Illawarra at Spark Arena.
