Cairns Taipans import Shannon Scott has touched down in Far North Queensland and is ready to make an immediate impact.

Cairns Taipans import Shannon Scott has touched down in Far North Queensland and is ready to make an immediate impact.

After a gruelling travel path to get to Cairns, which included four different flights, Scott met his new teammates for the first time earlier this week.

The 29-year-old is aware of the Taipans’ poor 2021/22 campaign, where they finished second last, and is determined to help Cairns get back to winning ways.

“Talking with the coaches and some of the players and the excitement over here, the willingness and wanting to change the season from last year. I’m looking forward to that,” Scott told media at Cairns Airport.

“I know the reputation and what happened last year, so it’s nothing to lose now. It’s go out there, play well and probably shock some people.”

Scott has allayed fears he will join the preseason program behind his teammates, as he was replicating the club’s workouts while in America.

“I tried to basically copy everything they were doing over here,” he said.

“Yoga, trying to have strength coaches and trainers on the court, and playing pick-up as well. I tried to do the same routine as what I would do out here so I’m not too far behind when I got here.

“I tried to emulate everything I could.”

The 29-year-old boasts international experience in Germany, Lithuania, Greece and Venezuela, as well as playing for the Long Island Nets in the G-League.

Cairns looms as a big improver in NBL23, having regained its emerging stars, Bul Kuol and Keanu Pinder and import Tahjere McCall, while bringing in more young talent with the likes of Sam Waardenburg, Lat Mayen and development player Joshua Davey. Import forward D.J Hogg will also slot into the starting five.

The Taipans tip-off the season on October 3 against the Tasmania JackJumpers.
