The scoring system does not have negative points for missed field goal attempts, so you are looking for players that are going to see good usage and have a decent volume of shot attempts. This went a long way to helping Bryce Cotton, Parker Jackson-Cartwright, Jaylen Adams and Trey Kell landing in the top 10 for average SuperCoach points last season. However, big men have their part to play too.

Last season Alan Williams was the top averaging player in NBL SuperCoach, despite problems with injury and foul trouble. There was a general consensus that there were not any good center options last season, but the scoring system certainly was not the issue with the center eligible players. In fact, nine of the top 10 players in SuperCoach points per minute were center eligible players.

This season, hopefully we can find a center eligible player that can play close to 30 minutes per game and we will be set.

With five bonus SuperCoach points for getting a double-double (double figure numbers in two categories, 10 points and 10 rebounds for example) this is what helps the big men score SuperCoach points as it is a lot more common to see double-doubles with rebounds, rather than assists.

Last season we had one triple-double (double-figures in three categories) when Trey Kell had 16 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists against the Hawks. The additional 10 bonus points led to a season-high 69 total SuperCoach points for Kell.

Triple-doubles are very rare, but Xavier Cooks went 16,10 and 10 in his second last regular season game for the Sydney Kings. Will we see another one this season? Will they be your SuperCoach captain?

Captain score
Your NBL SuperCoach captain will score double points for the round. In selecting your captain, you will have read our schedule 101 article and selected a player that has two matches for the round. You have a vice-captain option in SuperCoach NBL, but it is not recommended that you try and utilise a loophole that takes advantage of the rolling lockout as you may do in other SuperCoach codes. This is because having a zero score on your starting court will often be more detrimental than the benefit received. You also get the lowest scoring bench player as your emergency that will score at 100 per cent and the remainder of your bench will score at 50 cent.

Bench scoring
You read that correctly, in SuperCoach NBL your bench contributes to your score and they are not solely there for cash generation purposes. Your roster is made up of five starters and five bench players made up of guard, forward and centre eligible players.

What makes SuperCoach NBL different from most fantasy games is that 50 per cent of your bench players' fantasy points contributes to your total score.

How much you choose to invest in your bench will be the biggest strategic decision you will make with your initial roster. Do you select a few returning college players like Elijah Pepper or Tyler Robertson? ($69,000) Or perhaps you like the next stars such as Izan Almanza ($115,000). Or perhaps a returning local pro such as Jack White? ($232,000) You may even elect to pick up a fresh new import ($277,000) who will only score half points on your bench; but can be substituted in a week where he plays more games in a round than your initial starter. If you want to know more about player pricing make sure to read our 101 article.

You want your bench players to be contributing to your score as well as increasing in value. Player price increases will happen after the player has played three games in SuperCoach; NBL and SuperCoach Plus subscribers will have access to breakeven information to make sure they have the best cash cows in the game.

Make sure you read our article on the schedule, as some teams play their third game at the conclusion of Round 2 and one team has to wait until Round 5 before we see a price change.

This concludes our discussion on the scoring system. If you want to hear some additional thoughts including a few players on our bench-position watchlists, make sure you listen to our podcast on the scoring system.
