The New Zealand Breakers have officially announced the re-signing of star point guard Will McDowell-White

The New Zealand Breakers have officially announced the re-signing of star point guard Will McDowell-White, who has committed to the club for a further two seasons.

McDowell-White loomed as one of the highest priority free agents in the competition heading into NBL24 but turned down reported extensive interest from teams all across the competition.

The Brisbane-born guard began his career with the Sydney Kings in 2016 before embarking on an international basketball journey through Germany and the United States.

He returned to the NBL with the Breakers in 2020.

Still just 24 years of age, McDowell-White experienced a breakout campaign in NBL23, where he averaged 10.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 6.2 assists during the regular season en route to an NBL Most Improved Player nomination.

"Keeping Will in a Breakers short for another couple of seasons was our biggest goal this off-season," head coach Mody Maor said.

"The Breakers have been instrumental in turning him into the player he has become. I had my fingers crossed he would come back."

Maor believes McDowell-White's recommitment to New Zealand is indicative of the platform the club can provide to emerging local talents.

"I think it sends and unambiguous message to every good, young, emerging player in the NBL that the Breakers is the place to be if you want to improve, grow, and reach your goals," he continued.

"There's added value in coming to the Breakers.

"You might pay the price of leaving your home and travelling across the ditch, but you are rewarded by playing in the best environment in the league."

McDowell-White has joined Izayah Le'Afa, Cam Gliddon, Dan Fotu and Tom Vodanovich on New Zealand's NBL24 roster - along with development player Alex McNaught.

New Zealand has also stated the side is looking to confirm the signing of a sixth player later this week, and that it's in advanced talks to secure another Next Star talent for next season.
