After the success of South East Melbourne’s NBL22 clash with Cairns last season, the Phoenix will be returning to Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium in NBL23.
This time their opposition will be the Sydney Kings, with the reigning NBL champions set to make the trip to regional Victoria on Sunday, December 18.
A near capacity crowd turned out to support the Phoenix last time around, and the reception of the side from the local fans meant returning to the region was a no-brainer.
"I want to thank the crowd; they carried us with their energy and allowed us to continue to pressure the opposition. Regional Victoria has produced so many great sportsmen and women, and not just for our code, so it's great to bring games like this to them," Phoenix head coach Simon Mitchell said.
Mayor of Latrobe City Cr Kellie O'Callaghan welcomed the news of the NBL's return.
"We're excited to welcome both teams to Latrobe City for a fantastic night of basketball later in the year. Our basketball-loving community will relish the opportunity to watch elite-level players in their backyard, and we hope to see another capacity crowd," O'Callaghan said.
Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer was excited the team would again be bringing elite sport to Gippsland.
"It's great to be able to return to Gippsland after the success of our game in NBL22. Being able to utilise the redevelopment of GRISS and be one of the first professional sports to play there was special," Phoenix CEO Tommy Greer said.
The Phoenix will also be out and about in Gippsland leading up to the game.
"The opportunity to connect with basketball fans in the community of Gippsland is important for our club. It's a chance to see the basketball talent in the regional town and create some new Phoenix fans while there," Greer said.
