Perth Wildcats star Luke Travers is a “great ambassador” for Australian basketball, according to NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger.
Travers was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers with the 56th pick earlier this year, enhancing the NBL’s pathway to the NBA.
“He’s a great ambassador for Australia with the way that he carries himself, and we have no doubt when he does go to Cleveland and he gets his chance in the NBA, he’ll have a huge positive impact,” Loeliger said on The Dribble Podcast
“He’s the perfect example of how the NBL has developed into an NBA pathway.”
Travers is spending this season in Perth, with the Cavaliers keeping a close eye on his development and progression.
The 21-year-old is averaging 10.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games this season.
When asked about the influence of the Adelaide 36ers’ historic win against the Phoenix Suns, Loeliger said the game would result in basketball numbers rising in the younger generation.
“The impact will be really significant…kids were talking about it immediately after it happened,” he said.
“You want the next generation of superstars to be watching on and admiring the guys that they see out here on court in Australia doing it on an even bigger stage in the US.
“I think it will be one of those ‘do you remember when’ moments that people talk about a long time from now.”
