NBL Legend Re-Commits to Breakers

Thursday, May 11, 2023
One of the biggest legends of New Zealand basketball is going around again in NBL24.
One of the biggest legends of New Zealand basketball is going around again in NBL24, with Breakers all-time leading appearance-maker, scorer, and captain Tom Abercrombie signing a one-year extension with the club.
The four-time NBL champion has been an ever-present member of the Breakers since 2008, and has earned Grand Final MVP, and All-NBL First and Third Team nominations over the course of his storied career.
After a torn retina suffered at the NBL Blitz, Abercrombie missed the opening month of the NBL23 campaign, and was left stranded on 399-career appearances following the conclusion of the Championship Series.
He is also one of only two players in the NBL’s ’50-40-90 club’ after shooting 50 per cent from the field, 40 per cent from three and 90 per cent from the three-point line across the entire 2019-20 season.
"Tom deciding to play another season is a huge relief,” Breakers head caoch Mody Maor said.
"I did not want to face next season without having Tom in my corner. Having him in the locker room and on the floor assures a continuation of how we do things.
"If Tom was 18 today, we would be talking about him as a first-round NBA draft pick ... he embodies the modern basketballer and is exactly the player everyone wants to sign. Six foot six or seven, a long, versatile defender, a good shooter, who can do a little bit of a lot.
"Tom is the type of player who me as a coach and us as a team trust to be on the court in the most important moments next season."
Abercrombie has joined star point guard Will McDowell-White and Alex McNaught in re-committing to the club for NBL24, while Izayah Le’Afa, Cam Gliddon, Dan Fotu and Tom Vodanovich will all return.
