“Low risk, high reward”. That’s how ESPN Insider Olgun Uluc has described the Sydney Kings’ signing of athletic forward Makuach Maluach.

After two seasons as a professional – one in Finland and one at Melbourne United – Maluach will return to his home state in NBL24 to ply his trade for the reigning champions.

“He’s an Armidale kid who played at Newington in Sydney, so he is no stranger to the Sydney Kings, Uluc said on The Marketplace. “It’s not just depth – it’s also local depth.

“They would have kept their eye on him over the past few years when he went to New Mexico, and then that one season at Melbourne United.

“As an eleventh man, effectively, this is a low risk, high reward signing.”

The return of Maluach to Sydney follows a trend that’s emerging in free agency so far, and that’s players running it back in their home states – a trend headlined by the return of Keanu Pinder to Western Australia.

Maluach received limited court-time for United last season – in 18 appearances he averaged just 2.7 points per game – but his performances for the Darwin Salties in last season’s NBL1 North campaign is what had set tongues wagging, and he’s continued to dominate in the northern conference to start the new season.

Playing alongside Tasmania guard Sean Macdonald, Maluach registered 17 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in the Salties’ opening round win over Southern Districts, before adding 23 points, seven boards, four assists and three steals in a three-point loss to the Cairns Marlins.

“We know what Maluach is from an athletic standpoint,” Uluc said. “I think it’s underrated what he could be from a shooting perspective.

“He had really goof shooting numbers [last season], albeit at a low volume. You can see what you might have here.

“A 6’5”, 6’6”, 6’7” sort of wing who can do it on both ends, can you turn him into a three-and-d sort of guy?

“With the sort of contract he’s on and the place he’s in on this roster, I think it’s a low risk signing.

“If he turns out to be something that’s an absolute win for the Sydney Kings.”
