Goorjian confirms Hawks approach

NBL coaching legend Brian Goorjian has confirmed the Illawarra Hawks have approached him about their now-vacant head coaching position.

Former Illawarra head coach and NBL legend Brian Goorjian has confirmed the Hawks have approached him to fill the now vacant head coaching role at the club, but revealed to Newscorp he quickly turned them down.

Goorjian led the Boomers to Olympic bronze in 2021 and has won a record six NBL titles as a head coach. He helped the Hawks to a pair of semi-finals appearances in NBL21 and NBL22 before Jackomas – who was his assistant at the club – took over ahead of NBL23.

“There was a reach out to me, like two weeks ago, but my plate, right now, is full,” Goorjian told Newscorp.

Justin Tatum has been named as interim head coach of the side, and will take charge of his first game on Sunday against New Zealand.
