DUNKUARY Returns to Raise Funds for Australian Prostate Cancer

The Hungry Jack’s National Basketball League (NBL) and Sportsbet will raise much-needed funds for prostate cancer research again this season via its electrifying month-long DUNKUARY campaign.

For every dunk in an NBL game during January, Sportsbet will donate $500 to local charity Australian Prostate Cancer (APC), part of The Hospital Research Foundation Group. 

Last year the campaign raised an incredible $55,500 for Australian Prostate Cancer to progress research on the detection, treatment and management of prostate cancer.

Powered by Sportsbet, DUNKUARY will tip off with two exciting games on New Year’s Day and continue with an action-packed 41 games in total across the 31 days of January.

NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said prostate cancer was an important cause to get behind. 

“The funds we raise will help improve detection of prostate cancer, find new and better treatments and prevent the cancer from spreading, which are huge factors in saving lives from this disease,” Loeliger said. 

“We encourage all men, particularly those over the age of 40, to have a regular prostate cancer check-up as early intervention is the most significant factor for survival.” 

“We’re proud to partner with the NBL on such an important initiative, to not only raise funds, but also awareness around prostate cancer which is so common in Australia,” Sportsbet’s GM of Marketing, Tim Hernadi, said. 

“Last year we had an incredible 111 dunks light up the highlights reel throughout DUNKUARY. With such a large array of talent in the league, I have no doubt we can surpass this and provide even more money to prostate cancer research.” 

Australian Prostate Cancer researcher Dr Maggie Centenera said the funds raised will help men and their families have a brighter outlook. 

“Of the 24,000 Australian men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, about 15-20% of these will be diagnosed at an advanced stage which has no cure, and 1 in 3 men will see their treatment fail,” Dr Centenera said.

“The funds raised from this campaign will help researchers find new and better treatments, personalise treatments for individuals, and find ways to overcome resistance to treatments which is where we see the most deaths.
