Tasmania JackJumpers CEO Simon Brookhouse says finding a coach who sets the culture for the club will be integral to their success.
Brookhouse has told NBL Overtime Tasmania is on the search for a head coach and assistant coaches, with numerous agents already reaching out to the CEO about local and international coaching talents.
Brookhouse is targeting a coach “who is a good people manager and who is humble” as Tasmania looks to builds a successful and sustainable basketball program for the state.
“Being a start-up, it’s important we get a coach who sets the culture of what we want to be about. We want someone who acts and delivers on the beliefs and the values of the club,” Brookhouse said
“Tasmania is a place that needs you to be involved and engaged in the community, probably more so than some of the other bigger cities. There is no anonymity down here, the coach will well and truly be a prominent person.
“A real big part of what we are trying to do down here is working with the NBL1 clubs and Basketball Tasmania to grow the sport and not just be about the NBL team. We want to win games and we want to be really successful but being successful is also measuring how many more kids are playing the game down here and how many development pathways we create for future athletes. The coach is an integral part of that.
“It’s as much about what culture they bring and what leadership they bring. I want them to be able to deal with the lowest common denominator being the four-year-old kid who wants to be a basketball junkie and the highest paying sponsor.
“It needs to be someone who is a good people manager and who is humble. I don’t think it’s a good thing to come into a new state and a new town and be a bit over the top and too arrogant for what we need.
“I’m really keen over the next month to really go down that path of trying to find a coach, and if not, at least getting some quality assistant coaches who can get the ball rolling.”
The JackJumpers were unveiled as the Hungry Jack’s NBL’s 10th team last week and will enter the league in the 2021/22 season.
