Wildcats refuse to rush point guard call

The Perth Wildcats are refusing to be pressured into a hasty point guard signing for the Hungry Jack's NBL27 season, even as the clock ticks down on landing a player before Round 1.

Speaking to The West Australian, General Manager Basketball Danny Mills confirmed that whoever the club brings in won't feature at the CODE Sports NBL Blitz. The most optimistic outcome would see them travel with the squad to Japan for pre-season fixtures on September 8 and 10, purely to integrate with the group rather than play.

"We are in a ton of conversations and evaluating the market still to see what could potentially come up," Mills said.

"We're going to bring in the right guy. We waited and got [Kristian] Doolittle and then we waited and got [Dylan] Windler.

"With where our roster is now and with who we brought in this year and who the guys are who are returning, we are going to be very strategic on who we bring in. It's about patience. We're not going to just bring a guy in to bring a guy in."

Perth will already be without guard Jaron Rillie for the Blitz as he continues his recovery from hamstring surgery, leaving Elijah Pepper and Anthony Dell'Orso to shoulder point guard duties in Bendigo.

Yet with only 17 days left before the season opener against South East Melbourne on September 19, pressure is mounting to lock in the point guard many see as central to the Wildcats' title aspirations.

Still, Mills is banking on the continuity within his roster, anchored by Doolittle, Windler and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr., to ensure any late addition can slot in without missing a beat.
