The NBL could soon see one of its favourite sons return to its courts

The NBL could soon see one of its favourite sons return to its courts, with Olympic bronze medal winner Nick Kay eying a return to the competition at some point in the future.

Kay – who currently plays for the Shimane Susanoo Magic in Japan – began his professional career at the Townsville Crocodiles in 2015.

From Far North Queensland he went to Illawarra and then Perth, and it was with the Wildcats where he established himself as one of the best forwards in the competition.

He was part of the championship winning sides of 2019 and 2020 and was named in the All-NBL First Team in both seasons.

He also won the NZNBL MVP award as a member of the Wellington Saints in 2019.

“I’m hoping to get back at some point, but I don’t know when that will be,” Kay told SEN. “WA is home now so it would be great to be able to get back and play for those Wildcats again.

“I tried to watch every game I could and I still have a lot of friends who play for them like ‘Norto’ (Mitch Norton) and ‘Wags’ (Jesse Wagstaff).

“It was great watching them. Obviously it’s not the most successful season they’ve had but hopefully they can bounce back next year.

“They’ve got a lot of talent there so I’m keen to see how it all progresses over next season.”

Kay is back on Australian shores to represent the Boomers in FIBA World Cup Qualifiers against Bahrain and Kazakhstan.

He’s been named as captain of the squad, which also includes fellow former Wildcat Rhys Vague and young talent Alex Toohey

Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN via Kayo Sports and Foxtel.
