Melbourne United head coach Dean Vickerman has put pay to any rumours of a mooted departure from the club

Melbourne United head coach Dean Vickerman has put pay to any rumours of a mooted departure from the club, and has said discussions have already begun around a contract extension.

Vickerman – who has led United since 2017 – has one year remaining on the extension he signed following the side’s championship triumph in NBL21.

The former Breakers coach and Kings assistant has won three NBL titles as a head coach – one with New Zealand and two with Melbourne – along with six more as an assistant.

He has also been named as the NZNBL Coach of the Year on two occasions and recently led the Boomers in FIBA World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain and Kazakhstan.

“We’re in discussions here at the club to extend,” Vickerman told News Corp.

“We’ll see how that progresses, but yeah, I love my time here and I’d like to continue as long as possible.

Vickerman’s United side currently has just two contracted players heading into NBL24. Captain Chris Goulding and Defensive Player of the Year finalist Shea Ili.

Goulding is currently turning out for Paris Basketball in the French LNB Pro A during the NBL off-season.

NBL Free Agency opens on March 30, and all player, team and mutual options must be confirmed by March 27.
