Roth: "I’m not a very good coach"

Thursday, November 9, 2023

“I don’t take any credit. I’m not a very good coach, to be honest with you."

We know the JackJumpers have a strong culture and Scott Roth’s latest declaration around his coaching has provided an insight into why Tasmania has been so successful over its first three seasons.

Roth revealed he doesn't actually rate himself as a coach, instead driving his focus towards building strong relationships with players.

“I don’t take any credit. I’m not a very good coach, to be honest with you,” Roth said via CODE Sports.

“I don’t credit myself as a coach, I don’t rate myself as a coach, I don’t see myself as a coach. I see myself as a mentor.

“From my coaching standpoint I’m quite humble about where I’m at, and what I do. Coaching isn’t one of my strengths, managing people is my strength, seeing how the game is played out at the end of the day and trusting these guys to do the right thing.”

Roth has led the JackJumpers to numerous milestones, including taking the squad to the Grand Final in their inaugural season, and leading them to an appearance in last season’s Playoffs.

The NBL22 Coach of the Year has his team on track for another strong season, sitting fourth with a 5-4 record.

We know it is up to Roth to steer the players’ mindsets in the right direction, and they are delivering on the court.

The JackJumpers next play the Adelaide 36ers on the road at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday at 8:00pm AEDT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN via Kayo.
