Next in line: Is Bogut Sydney's future King?

"You have to think about the future … and what better guy to lead the Kings into the next phase?"

The Sydney Kings bolstered their coaching staff this off-season with the addition of recent FIBA Hall of Fame inductee Andrew Bogut, a move which Damon Lowery believes is a foreshadowing.

“To have him on the Sydney Kings' coaching staff, that is a succession plan,” he said.

“Just like they do in the AFL, when they bring in the next coach and he hasn’t been an assistant coach (before).”

The Kings are still headed up by the greatest coach of all time in Brian Goorjian, with the six-time championship winner very much in the infancy of this coaching stint - in year two.

“Now, Brian isn’t going to get sacked mid-season or anything ridiculous like that,” Lowery added.

“You have to think about the future … and what better guy to lead the Kings into the next phase?”

Since Chase Buford won back-to-back titles with the Kings, they have struggled to make any sort of deep championship run, regardless of how talented their roster has looked.

“Brian can get them re-established after the Mahmoud Abdelfattah fiasco … now he consolidates it and then in a few years’ time – maybe a year, maybe two – both of them then take them over the hump,” Lowery continued.

Bogut will no doubt bring a fresh feel and outlook to the Kings’ playbook, having gone down as one of the most successful Australian basketballers in history. It was a career that Derek Rucker believes sets him up perfectly for this next adventure.

“Bogues is going to provide them with outstanding defensive focus,” he said.

“I think he will add a perspective that I noticed in discussion with Bogut in our commentary… the way he sees the defensive structures and scheme is so much different to the way you and I see it, Damon.”

As for the right now, Lowery believes the Kings are already winners, because of the blueprint they are laying out for the club.

“It’s a win-win with Bogut in the league,” he said.

“From marketing, from a culture standpoint, from the knowledge, the overall team intelligence goes up exponentially.

“Obviously, that’s going to pay off dividends, whether it’s this year or next. It’s definitely going to pay off.”
