Brad Newley is set to play an 11th season in the NBL, after re-signing with Melbourne United for NBL24.

Newley has 309 NBL games to his name, along with 10 years in the top-flight of European basketball, making him one of Australia’s most respected and revered players across the past two decades.

The 38-year old spent the last two seasons in Melbourne, after five years at the Sydney Kings between 2016 to 2021 and three with the Townsville Crocodiles at the start of his career, from 2004-2007.

“I’m really appreciative to be getting another chance to play for this great club,” Newley told the club’s website.

“I want to help get us back to where we should be and that’s towards the top of the NBL ladder.

“This group that’s coming together is really special. I like the young guys we’ve brought in and how they complement the returning players. it’s a nicely balanced squad and it’s going to be great fun to be a part of.

“Looking at the end of last year, we weren’t that far off the mark, we just needed health, and this group that’s been put together has a lot of depth. A lot of them are a lot younger than me, but they’ll give me energy, and I’ll hopefully be able to give them some energy as well.”

Teammate Chris Goulding welcomed the return of his long-time friend and Boomers teammate.

“I’m really happy for ‘Newls’ and his family to extend with the club again,” Goulding said.

“He’s really embraced the culture at Melbourne United and has become a real positive driver of it recently, while bringing that veteran mentality that every team needs.”

Newley logged 14 minutes per appearance across the NBL23 season, as a valuable role-player off the bench, averaging 4.6 points a game.

He joins Goulding, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Luke Travers, Shea Ili, Ariel Hukporti, Tanner Krebs, Flynn Cameron, Kyle Bowen, Zac Triplett and Campbell Blogg as Melbourne’s contracted players heading into the NBL24 season.
