The NBL sends its deepest thoughts to former player Jason Joynes during his cancer battle.

The entire NBL family and community sends its deepest thoughts to former NBL player Jason Joynes and his family, as Joynes battles a rare form of Neuroendocrine Tumours cancer.

Joynes’ NBL journey began with the Westside Melbourne Saints in 1989, when he played four games for the club and made his professional league debut at 19 years of age. His production increased significantly during his sophomore campaign in 1990, when he appeared in a career-high 26 matches for the Saints.

After putting himself on the NBL map in Melbourne, Joynes made the switch to the Newcastle Falcons in 1991, where he spent the next three seasons.

His best statistical year came with the Falcons in 1992, when he averaged 7.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.

The final two seasons of Joynes’ professional career came with the Geelong Supercats in 1994 and 1995. One of his best games came in the 1995 campaign, when he amassed 23 points and 15 rebounds in a Round 18 clash against the North Melbourne Giants.

Joynes also played 10 seasons for the Mount Gambier Pioneers in the SEABL (now NBL1) competition, where he became a club legend.

After playing his junior basketball with Sturt in South Australia, Joynes has become a mainstay in the state’s basketball community.

He was the head coach of the South Australian U20 men’s team from 2018-2019, head coach of the North Adelaide women’s Premier League team from 2018-2019, the assistant coach of the South Australia Metro U18 Boys Assistant Coach from 2016-2018 and the assistant coach of the South Australia Metro U16 girls 2014 National Championship team.

Joynes has served as the Vice President of the Woodville Warriors from 2021 onwards, while also coaching junior teams with Woodville, North Adelaide and Forestville.

The NBL sends its deepest thoughts to Joynes during his cancer battle.
