Goorjian returns as Kings head coach

The Sydney Kings have confirmed the return of Brian Goorjian as the club's head coach.

Coaching legend Brian Goorjian has returned to the NBL, taking over the Sydney Kings on a three-year deal.

Goorjian's appointment comes following the departure of former head coach Mahmoud Abdelfattah

Goorjian, who will lead the Boomers in their Paris Olympic campaign, has won a record six NBL titles over the course of his career, and led the Kings to their title three-peat between 2003-2005.

He’s also taken charge of more games (803) in NBL history than any other head coach, and has the second-highest winning percentage of anyone to coach more than two games, behind former Kings coach Chase Buford.

Goorjian’s last stint in the NBL was in charge of Sydney’s local rivals Illawarra, whom he led to back-to-back top four finishes in NBL21 and NBL22.

"Honestly, I never thought I'd leave Sydney the first time after we built everything from the ground up and were winning consistently - it felt like home to me and I thought I'd finish my coaching career there, as we'd built something really special," Goorjian said.

"But when I left, I never looked over my shoulder as I didn't think I'd ever get a chance to coach the Kings again - it's amazing how life works like this sometimes.

"I've had a lot of great opportunities come to me in my career, so to be able to come full circle and come back where I've made so many special memories and my photo is hanging from the rafters, is going to be incredible."

"Having spoken to the ownership group at length recently, I have complete confidence we both have a similar philosophy when it comes to running a successful basketball organisation on and off the court.

"It just feels like a really good fit to be back in Sydney, and I can't wait to get to work."
