"Enough is enough": Jackomas calls for change

Friday, October 13, 2023
Jacob Jackomas has slammed his team following a 30-point loss to Tasmania.
Illawarra head coach Jacob Jackomas says he’s only taking one thing from the Hawks’ Thursday night dismantling at the hands of the JackJumpers – the obvious need to be better.
The Hawks fell to Tasmania by 30 points, and were outscored 31-10 in the second quarter alone.
While 11 Illawarra players were afforded at least 10 minutes of court time, only two – Gary Clark and Justin Robinson – hit double-digit scoring. Conversely, four of Tasmania’s starting five scored at least 10 points, while Anthony Drmic scored nine.
Majok Deng also added 14 points from the bench.
“Enough is enough,” Jackomas said. “It’s three games in and we’re averaging 100 points (against) – what I take out of it is it’s not good enough.
“We put a decent performance together, come into an environment that’s going to challenge us, we don’t do enough to be in it, then we’re always back-pedaling trying to do something and guys are looking at the bench.
“It’s just not good enough so if we keep going like this this league’s too good and the same results are going to happen, so I get the fact we’re going to have to change.
“We didn’t guard and they’re [the JackJumpers] talented – so we’ve got to respect them that way. Please don’t think I’m showing any disrespect to the opposition, because they kicked our ass today.”
Clark was something of a lone bright spot for the Hawks in the defeat, as he pulled together his best individual performance since linking up with Illawarra.
The former Houston Rocket shot a solid 6-11 from the field – including 3-6 three-pointers – and added a pair of blocks.
He called on his teammates to trust in each other and follow the scout if they’re to defeat Adelaide on Saturday.
“Our guys in that second quarter fell into a nasty place of they’re doing what they do really well, and we weren’t doing anything we do well – at all,” he said.
“It’s one of those games where we have to change, and at the end of the day he gives us the recipe and if guys don’t stick to the script then we have no chance at the end of the day, especially against a club like that.
“They’re just disciplined … you come in here and think you can just play around with the ball, go empty possessions and just not guard, you have no chance.
“(On Saturday) we’ve got a team that’s desperate in Adelaide, but we should be way more desperate just off of getting our tails whooped like we got whooped tonight.”
Illawarra play Adelaide live on ESPN via Kayo at 5:30pm AEDT.
