Cooks Comments on Potential NBA Opportunities

Monday, February 6, 2023
Xavier Cooks, like most – if not all – NBL players, has aspirations for the bright lights of the NBA.
Xavier Cooks, like most – if not all – NBL players, has aspirations for the bright lights of the NBA.
The likes of Jock Landale and Jack White have used the NBL as a platform to take their talents to the United States in recent years, while Matthew Dellavedova used his time at Melbourne United to find his way to Sacramento.
The pathway from Australia to America exists, and it’s becoming genuine and well-trodden.
Cooks – who has been nominated for the NBL MVP Award for his exploits this season – says there’s a legitimate chance that he suits up in the NBA next season.
“I’ve had a couple of lunches with scouts, some Zoom calls. They’ve been ongoing for a couple of months now,” Cooks told News Corp.
“In maybe the last two or three weeks they’ve really ramped up. A lot of DMs and scouts who’ve flown over to watch some games.
“I mostly let my agent handle that.”
The Sydney forward has twice taken his talents to the NBA Summer League in the hopes of securing an NBA contract – first with the Warriors in 2018 then the Suns in 2019.
He says his focus is fully on winning another NBL championship.
“I really try and focus on this team and winning,” he said.
“I really believe that if I win a championship over here that’s my best chance of getting back over there.”
