It doesn’t seem like long ago that Brisbane import Tyler Johnson was taking to an NBA floor

It doesn’t seem like long ago that Brisbane import Tyler Johnson was taking to an NBA floor and starting games alongside the likes of Dwyane Wade and Bam Adebayo.

After eight seasons at the top level though, Johnson has come to the NBL with his eyes on the prize.

Announced as a Bullet just under a month ago, the 350-game NBA veteran touched down in Brisbane on Wednesday morning as he prepares to take on his first season in Australia.

“I didn’t come here to be a part of a basketball team, I came to be a part of a really good basketball team," Johnson said.

"To grow with some of the young guys [and] allow ourselves to compete for something out here.

“I’ve come in with really high expectations … I know where we finished last year and I’m looking forward to putting a couple more wins in that win column.

“Everyone has been great in reaching out and making me feel welcome … [but] we’re not just here to go through a season, but [to] really compete for something.”

Johnson will walk into the Brisbane locker room with a pair of familiar faces on day one, having spent a season at the Phoenix Suns with Aron Baynes and having faced off against Nathan Sobey during his college career at Fresno State.

Baynes and Johnson shared the court together at the Suns during the 2019-20 season. Brisbane’s newest guard appeared in 31 games that season, while the Australian big man took to the floor 42 times.

“We (Johnson and Baynes) played in Phoenix. We had the opportunity to play for about a year together so we got the opportunity to get to know each other,” Johnson said.

“In the NBA you’re playing every other day and when you’re not playing you’re practicing or travelling. We had the opportunity to form a little bit of a relationship and I’m looking forward to growing it out here.

“[Baynes signing] was definitely a great kicker when we were able to talk about it because of the familiarity. I played against Nate (Sobey) in college, so there was some familiarity with the team before I was able to come over here.”
