Buford's Emotional Farewell

Former Sydney coach Chase Buford has taken to social media to pen an emotional farewell to the Kings and their fanbase, and says he recognises the “need for clarity” as the club approaches the NBL24 campaign.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Kings had elected not to exercise the third-year team option they held on the two-time championship winning coach’s contract, following reported interest from NBA sides.

“As disappointed as we (Buford and his wife Kelly) are not to be back to compete for a three-peat, we understand the Kings’ need for clarity as they look towards defending the crown yet again. We wish them nothing but success going forward,” Buford wrote.

“To the fans and members of the Kingdom, thanks for embracing this nut and always sticking with me. Your support for the team in the past couple of seasons has been historic.

“Thank you for the wild ride the last two years have been. Both the club and the city have welcomed Kelly and me (sic) with open arms and, together, we have made some magic happen along the way.

“Our daughter was born here, forever cementing our connection to this place. This city, and the people here, will always hold a special place in our heart.”

He then went on to show his appreciation for the Sydney coaching and playing staff.

“To the players, it was an honour to be your coach. Watching two unique groups come together and achieve our ultimate goal was a special thing I don’t take for granted. I will forever be appreciative of your hard work and willingness to sacrifice for the collective,” Buford continued.

“The memories we’ve made, and the relationships we’ve built, will leave lasting imprints on me and my family. I can’t wait to follow along your individual journeys as your careers continue.

“To my staff, you were the drivers of this team’s success on a day-to-day more so than anyone. You all poured every bit of yourselves into this team.

“Thank you to the organisation for the wonderful opportunity to lead this group over the last two seasons. Together, we shattered records left and right along the way to back-to-back titles.”

Sydney’s search for a new coach will begin immediately, with ESPN Insider Olgun Uluc reporting the club is keen to have someone in place by the time NBA Summer League tips off in July.
