Heartland Hero Returns to South East Melbourne

The South East Melbourne Phoenix have added a touch of NBL greatness to their coaching ranks for NBL24
The South East Melbourne Phoenix have added a touch of NBL greatness to their coaching ranks for NBL24, and have signed two-time NBL champion, 2007 NBL MVP and former Brisbane Bullets General Manager of Basketball Sam Mackinnon as an assistant coach.
Mackinnon – who has joined on a two-year deal – began his professional playing career alongside new Phoenix head coach Mike Kelly at the South East Melbourne Magic, and the pair both played integral parts in the side’s 1996 championship.
“I’m really excited to be back with Mike,” Mackinnon said. “I’ve kept a close eye on the Phoenix over the last few years and really like what they’ve done in the community.
“They’re not a start-up club anymore, and traditionally it’s very hard to be successful straight up. They’ve been very, very close. I feel like they’re ready to take the next step.
“I’ve had different roles with the NBL over the last few years, but as an assistant I’m just happy to play my role.”
Mackinnon spent the first four seasons of his career playing with the South East Melbourne Magic.
Mackinnon was named as interim head coach of the Bullets last season upon the departure of James Duncan and led the side to a 1-3 record, before Greg Vanderjagt took over coaching responsibilities.
His move to South East Melbourne will reunite him with former Bullets centre Gorjok Gak.
“Sam brings great knowledge and feel for the game that will help shape the Phoenix as we head into pre-season,” Mike Kelly said.
“His ability to connect with players is going to help them grow individually and make us stronger as a team.
“I am so excited to start working with Sam.”
