Could Hawks land dream import trio?

Thursday, May 1, 2025
"He’s coming off an All-NBL First Team season, a championship season, so his value already goes up exponentially."
Matt Hurt, Tyler Harvey, Trey Kell III – they’re three of the best imports in the NBL, and it’s still very possible all three could line up for the Illawarra Hawks next season.
On Wednesday it was revealed Hurt, an MVP finalist in NBL25, could be on his way to the Hawks, with the club having had “multiple conversations” with the Phoenix star.
Hurt isn’t going to come cheap, but according to ESPN’s Olgun Uluc, Illawarra is hopeful of retaining star guard Kell III too, in what would form a lethal import trio.
Three All-NBL First Team members on the same roster … look out the rest of the competition.
“They’d like to bring Matt Hurt and Trey Kell into the mix,” Uluc said on The Marketplace.
“It does feel like a Trey Kell signature would take a little bit longer, because he is gauging his market in the international space.”
There’s still plenty of work to be done though, with Pete Hooley saying Kell’s value would have gone through the roof off the back of a memorable season.
“I wouldn’t be ruling out the Trey Kell signature, but as it stands right now, I’d be less confident in getting that done, because of how high his value is right now,” Hooley said.
“He’s coming off an All-NBL First Team season, a championship season, so his value already goes up exponentially.
“Now he’s gone to play in Asia and played very well.
“All of that combined, he is at a very different price tag than last year.”
The Hawks are well on the way in their roster build for NBL26, having already signed 11 players from their championship-winning team.
So what’s next for Justin Tatum and his team as they look to go back-to-back?
