The Sky Sport New Zealand Breakers and Yanni Wetzell have agreed to a release from the remainder of his contract, with their star big man set to join Spanish EuroLeague team Baskonia.

The 25 year-old Wetzell has enjoyed a stellar season with the Breakers, averaging 17.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in what has been a challenging year for New Zealand.

Wetzell began his NBL career with the South East Melbourne Phoenix last season, establishing himself as one of the best young bigs in the competition following a successful College career that ended at San Diego State University.

Speaking on the decision to leave the Breakers, Wetzell highlighted his development this season and long held ambition to play at the EuroLeague level.

“The opportunity to play in the EuroLeague has been a goal of mine since I was at school; it has just come earlier than I expected,” he said.

“I want to thank Matt Walsh and the Breakers for their incredible support and what I’ve learnt in my season with the club.

“This opportunity would not have presented itself without the unwavering energy the Breakers coaching staff have put into my game.  I am a Breaker for life.”

In 20 games this season with the Breakers, Wetzell saw a season-high 27 points come in January against the Breakers, as well as a standout 17 points and 18 rebounds in an overtime thriller against Perth.

Development Player Sam Timmins has been elevated to Wetzell's roster spot for the remainder of NBL22.
