Age just a number in Boomers selection headache

Age just a number in Boomers selection headache

Brian Goorjian says international experience - or lack thereof - will not impact his decision on who will make Australia's final Olympic roster.

The Boomers are in the early stages of a changing of the guard, but despite a handful of Australia’s Tokyo heroes now sitting north of 35 years old, Brian Goorjian says age will not be a factor when he selects his final roster for Paris.

The initial roster of 22 players has been cut to 7, but the likes of NBL stars DJ Vasiljevic, Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay are still in contention to play at their first major tournaments, while emerging stars Dyson Daniels and Josh Giddey are set for increased roles.

Ten of the 17 players on the roster were part of Tokyo’s bronze medal winning group of three years ago, and Goorjian says age and experience are irrelevant in Olympic push.

“When it comes to the Olympics, I can’t be selecting someone because you’re old and young,” Goorjian told News Corp.

“It might be you’ve moved to an age, and you aren’t the type of player you once were – that is a different scenario – but as far as our group right now I’m not selecting on age or experience.

“We made the big moves heading into the World Cup and now that (age) isn’t in my mindset now.”
