Wing-man joins Melbourne United

Melbourne United has rounded out its roster with the signing of a young American power forward, Devin Williams. 22-year-old Williams impressed Melbourne coaching staff and management after starring at West Virginia University where he averaged 13.3 points and led WVU in rebounding with 9.5 boards per game last season. In 2016 he was named to the All-Big 12 second team and recorded the most double doubles in the Big 12 with 16. From Cincinnati, Ohio, Williams suited up for the Milwaukee Bucks during NBA Summer League and while he recorded limited court time behind Aussie Thon Maker he still showed enough to impress. Melbourne CEO Vince Crivelli said Williams was an exciting young player with an incredible wingspan. “His energy and presence on both ends of the floor stood out to us, he is 6’9” but his wingspan is 6’11” and has a strong low post presence.” Wiliams went to the same high school, MontVerde Academy as Ben Simmons and helped them win the National High School Invitational Championship in 2013, when he was also named first-team all-state. Head Coach Dean Demopoulos said he believed that Williams could have an impact in the NBL immediately. “He is a young big strong player with a great motor. He had a terrific three years at WVU and I think he will work well with the rest of our roster.” Williams stepped off the plane in Melbourne this morning and said he was already feeling very welcomed by the Club. "It’s a blessing to be in this position. To have the coaching staff and general manager want to develop me as a player. I’m very excited to be here.  My focus is becoming the best version of myself. I want to become a better player and a better man. I’m very passionate, a hard worker. Somebody that will do whatever it takes to win." Williams said his time at West Virginia University has set him up well for the NBL. “Nothing was given to us. We had to work for everything. I learned a lot during my time at WVU and I’m ready to put it to the test here and learn the pro-game style.”
