Kings defeat 'Cats 89-76 in pre-season clash

In one of the most anticipated clashes of the pre-season, the Sydney Kings made a statement against their long-time rivals the Perth Wildcats, defeating them 89-76 in Moss Vale, New South Wales. In a first quarter played with the speed and intensity of a regular season game, the Wildcats opened the game with a bucket from import Casey Prather, before Shawn Redhage hit Perth’s first three. Prather showed the Wildcats fans what he’ll be bringing to the team this season, running the floor and drawing two fouls on back to back baskets. Sydney's import Marcus Thornton responded with three triples of his own in the first. The second quarter belonged to Damian Martin. Playing with his trademark intensity, Martin exploded for five points in 30 seconds early in the quarter, before adding two steals, one rebound and setting up two layups for Shawn Redhage. The defensive intensity was contagious, highlighted by Casey Prather’s excellent fast break defence and block against Sydney’s Thornton. At the offensive end, Nate Jawai showed some quality passing in the post, but it was nothing on Josh Childress who notched up 11 points by the half. The Wildcats fought hard after the break, with Casey Prather again displaying his athleticism, finishing with a two-hand slam following a steal. Two free throws from Jesse Wagstaff cut the lead to three midway through the third quarter, but a period of strong shooting saw the Kings extend their lead to double digits. Prather continued his strong showing in the fourth quarter, with another steal and slam, but the Kings pulled away as the Wildcats looked to manage the minutes with tomorrow’s game against the Illawarra Hawks in mind. Sydney Kings 89 (Thornton 24, Childress 20, Cadee 10) Perth Wildcats 76 (Redhage 18, Prather 16, Knight 10, Hire 10) Box Score
