Townsville to host 2015 NBL Blitz

The National Basketball League today announced that the NBL Blitz will be held in Townsville from 24-27 September 2015, bringing all eight teams and Australia’s leading NBL stars to Townsville for the four-day event. Executive Director of the National Basketball League Larry Kestelman said he was excited to announce that official hosting rights had been granted to the defending Blitz champions - the Townsville Crocodiles. "With the new direction of the NBL, we are thrilled to award the tournament to Townsville. It will be fantastic promotion for their club and the League will be using the popular tourist destination to raise the bar of the NBL Blitz," said Mr Kestelman. "The main fixtures will be held at one of Queensland’s leading venues, the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre, while all players and staff will stay at the world-class Jupiters Hotel and Casino, seeing standards improving across the board and setting up a brilliant launching pad for the season.” Mr Kestelman added that granting the Queensland-based club pre-season rights is all part of the strategy for the new NBL with the possibility of a third Queensland team to join the Crocodiles and the Cairns Taipans. “The newly appointed board of the NBL has a very strong focus on working with regional cities to promote sports tourism and also to deliver a first-class sports entertainment product to regional fans. The Blitz will be the first opportunity we have to show tourism and government stakeholders how we are reinvigorating the NBL in the regions,” he said. “There is also a very strong interest for further expansion of teams in Queensland, and taking all of our NBL talent to Townsville will assist with those ongoing developments.“ The 2015 NBL Blitz will see the Crocodiles have home court advantage as they look to defend their Loggins-Bruton Cup after winning the tournament last year, and play their first game at ‘The Swamp’ ahead of their official return to their old stomping grounds in the 2015/16 NBL season. Townsville Crocodiles Chairman Andrew Gisinger is pleased that Townsville get to make their mark on the national sporting stage. “The NBL has undergone many but essential changes to ensure its success into the future, and we are grateful for the opportunity they have offered us as an extension of that,” Mr Gisinger said. “This pre-season tournament will help with the revitalisation of the Crocodiles and the NBL in the Townsville region, and will showcase the club’s commitment to the community and dedication to the promotion of our region.” The 2015 NBL Blitz will consist of 12 games, with each team to play three games each, while basketball clinics, charity appearances and community events will also feature in the schedule. The Blitz is supported by Townsville City Council, Jupiters Hotel and Casino, Townsville Basketball and the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre.
