Tai Webster Breakers Deal Basically Done: Santamaria

The New Zealand Breakers have all but secured the services of Tai Webster for NBL21 according to commentator and analyst Liam Santamaria.

The Breakers have been chasing the New Zealand native since the COVID-19 pandemic rocked the basketball world and Santamaria believes the 25-year-old will be playing in his home country this season.

“My understanding is that the Tai Webster deal, if the ink is not on the paper, it might as well be,” Santamaria told NBL Overtime.

Webster has made a name for himself overseas, having last played for Turkish giants Galatasaray. He was averaging 10.9 points, 4.1 assists and 2.4 rebounds in the Turkish league this season before the campaign ended due to the pandemic. In the EuroCup, Webster was amassing 10.6 points, 3.7 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Santamaria had more good news for New Zealand when providing an update on the status of star import Scotty Hopson.

“They are very confident Scotty Hopson is going to be back. The Breakers are up and about,” Santamaria said.

Hopson was an MVP contender in NBL20, averaging 19.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game.
