Snakes secure Scottie Wilbekin for 15/16

The Cairns Taipans have retained club MVP and All-NBL first team point guard Scottie Wilbekin for the 2015/16 season, the club confirmed today. As a 21-year-old rookie Wilbekin averaged 15.2 points, 4.3 assists 1.1 steals per game, leading the Taipans to a club-record 21-7 finish and into their first grand final since 2011. He is the first Taipan to win club MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honours in the same season, a fact club CEO Mark Beecroft says made Wilbekin a priority signing. “Scottie was a huge part of our success last year. He led by example at both ends of the floor and consistently lifted for the big occasions,” Beecroft said. “To have Scottie return amongst a stable core roster has been our goal from the start, and I’m excited for this club and our fans to have secured his signature,” he said. The signing was made possible via several contributions by local sponsors to the club’s Spend to the Cap fund. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank those Cairns community members who made this signing possible via our Spend to the Cap fund,” Beecroft said. Wilbekin left Cairns immediately following the NBL grand final to play out the Greek A1 Basketball League season with AEK Athens, averaging 8.0 points and 3.9 assists in 9 appearances. He is currently in his home state of Florida where he will suit up in the Orlando NBA Summer League for the Orlando Magic to chase his NBA dream. Wilbekin hit a key shot three-pointer late in his first game for the Magic over the weekend, finishing with 7 points and one assist in 15 minutes in the Magic’s 87-76 win over the Detroit Pistons.
