Round 1 sets tone for season 16/17

The NBL’s continued revamp has proved a hit with basketball supporters with Round 1 crowd figures surpassing last season’s best. On average just under 7500 fans attended the six Round 1 games, an increase of 1200 fans per game on last season’s best attended round. Nearly 7000 fans turned up in Brisbane to watch the Bullets mark their return to the NBL with a decisive win over the Perth Wildcats. Both Melbourne United and the Sydney Kings hosted lively crowds in excess of 8000, while the Wildcats returned home to play the Cairns Taipans in front of just under 13,000 passionate fans at Perth Arena. “It’s fantastic for the sport of basketball and the NBL that nearly 45,000 people came along to watch a NBL game last week,” said Jeremy Loeliger, General Manager of the NBL. “We knew we were well set to build on last season’s figures and we are really pleased that we’ve achieved such a big result in the first round. “What’s really encouraging is that the strong attendance figures at the stadiums were matched by equally strong viewer numbers on Fox Sports. “Although we’re only six games into the season, these impressive figures provide some good early feedback that the Australian public is embracing the premium entertainment product we’re delivering. With Round 1 serving up several tight finishes, and one game that went into over-time, the competition has got off to a cracking start,” said Loeliger.
