R4 Preview: Melbourne v Sydney

First will play sixth when Melbourne United clash with the Sydney Kings at Hisense Arena on Sunday. Star studded Melbourne are off to a dream beginning, sitting on 6-0 at the top of the ladder. Meanwhile, Sydney got off to a horror 1-4 start, before improving to 2-4 after a win over Townsville on Friday night. Al Harrington, the most experienced NBA player to ever ply his trade in the NBL, will play his second game in the purple and gold. Harrington finished his first outing with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists in a win over Townsville - despite arriving in the country just a few days before tip-off – and will almost certainly see increased minutes and production at Hisense Arena. Melbourne’s defence is the stingiest in the league, allowing just 75.8 points per game. As a result, Sydney will need solid offensive outputs from not just Harrington, but fellow scorers Julian Khazzough and Marcus Thornton as well. The Kings sorely need some efficient offence from import guard Marcus Thornton. The former Boston Celtics draft pick has shot at just 31.3 per cent from the field so far. Melbourne are fresh off a nail-biting victory over Perth, having proven they can officially hang with the team that has set the benchmark for NBL success. United’s offence dried up in the last quarter against the Wildcats on Thursday, as the game ground to a halt when the pressure kicked in. However, Sydney’s defence isn’t on the same level as Perth’s, and Melbourne will almost certainly resume their offensive fireworks. United will again be without star import Hakim Warrick, who remains sidelined with a groin strain. In his place will be American forward Garrett Jackson, a former teammate of Stephen Holt at Saint Mary’s University. Jackson impressed in the South East Australian Basketball League this year with North-West Tasmania, averaging 20.6 points per game. The American forward played just seven minutes against Perth, but like Harrington, may well see increased minutes on Sunday. Watch LIVE and FREE on Go! from 3pm EDT, FOX SPORTS News and the NBL app.
