Melbourne United has signed promising young Australian forward Malith Machar as a Development Player.

Melbourne United has signed promising young Australian forward Malith Machar as a Development Player.

Machar, 23, will join United on a two-year deal, with a team option for the second season, following a strong showing in the NBL1 Central for the Forestville Eagles.

Helping lead one of the top teams in the competition, Machar has averaged 16 points and eight rebounds, while knocking down 45 per cent of his three-pointers so far this season for the Eagles.

Machar said he can’t wait to enter Melbourne’s development system and help the side during the campaign.

“I’m really excited to be heading to the best club in the NBL,” Machar said.

“I know they can help me take my game to the next level, because now that I’m here, I’m still not satisfied, I want to keep getting better.

“I want to do whatever I can to help this team win, because winning is the most important thing.”

Having watched Machar’s development closely over the off-season, United coach Dean Vickerman said he’s been impressed by his growth and believes the forward can contribute right away.

“We saw Malith early in the off-season and were really impressed,” Vickerman said.

“We gave him some things to work on and to the credit of himself, Forestville and Rashad Tucker, who we know has been working with him day in and day out, he’s gotten better at everything we asked.

“At 6’6 he’s a long, versatile athlete that can play at a high tempo, defend multiple positions and shoot the ball well from beyond the arc. I can’t wait to get him back in Melbourne and continue to see just how much he can do for us.”

Machar fills United’s third Development Player spot, joining Zac Triplett and Joshua Duach.
