Off-Season Tracker: Queensland

The Queensland Basketball League (QBL) has been bolstered by NBL talents, as players keep the pace during the off-season. Ahead of the Australian Boomers training camp next month, Adam Gibson is finishing up his short-term contract with the Gold Coast Rollers. Averaging 17 points over four weeks, Gibson is getting back to full fitness following off-season ankle surgery. The new Brisbane Bullets guard posted 21 points and six rebounds against the Rockhampton Rockets on the weekend, but fell 95-107 at Hegvold Stadium. Other Bullets suiting up in the QBL include Shaun Bruce and Mitch Young, who have both won Player of the Week Awards. Bruce recently took out the honour in Round Six, after leading the Mackay Meteors on their three-game road trip. First up, Bruce led the Meteors with a double-double of 19 points and 11 assists in a 99-98 win against the Phoenix Clippers, serving them their first loss of the year. Bruce then managed the team-high 22 points and seven rebounds in their 78-77 victory over the SC Rip, before registering the game-high 27 points in a narrow loss against the Brisbane Capitals. Mitch Young has been suiting up for the Logan Thunder, and is currently averaging 24 points and 11. 6 rebounds. In the 87-80 victory over the Gladstone Port City Power on the weekend, Young had 21 points and nine rebounds, shooting at 66 per cent from the field. Meanwhile, the Cairns Marlins boast Taipans talent, with both Alex Loughton and Damon Heiur enjoying a well-earned bye this week after going two-from-three last round. Heiur only signed his first full-time NBL contract with the Snakes last season, and is making a statement on the back of his first professional year. He dropped a massive 38-points against the Thunder, and followed up with 27 and 20 points against South West Metro and the Gold Coast respectively. The South West Metro Pirates have Adelaide 36ers guard Brendan Teys as part of their outfit, who has been very consistent with 12 points and four boards against both the Marlins and Rollers last round. The QBL’s 15-round season continues this Friday, where the Cairns Marlins host the Mackay Meteors, while South West Metro visits Ipswich, and Logan take on Brisbane.
