Off-Season Tracker: Puerto Rico
AJ Ogilvy is due to arrive in Puerto Rico today and according to the management of the Atenienses de Manatí club, will suit up for the first time this weekend.
The Illawarra Hawks centre will meet a familiar face on the team, with former Hawks guard Adris Deleon his new team mate. Ogilvy, who was recently named to the All-Star Five First team for the second time in his career, will be a big man boost to the Puerto Rican side as they look to improve on their six win, six loss record. This Saturday, Ogilvy and Deleon will take on Adelaide scoring machine Ebi Ere, as he plays with Arecibo Captains for his sixth year in the Puerto Rican League. The Caribbean island continues to be a hot destination for players during the NBL off-season, and this year will see the top three leading rebounders in Ogilvy, Daniel Johnson (Santeros de Aguada) and Omar Samhan (San Germán Athletics) suiting up. This League has eleven teams and they play 36 games in the regular season, with Ogilvy’s Athenians sitting sixth place on the ladder. Damion James, who made a brief appearance as an import with the Sydney Kings this season, is currently leading the League in rebounding (12.1) and is second in points (19.0) playing for the Santurce Crabbers. Former Townsville Crocodiles forward Brian Conklin has returned for his second stint in Puerto Rico, this time playing for the Quebradillas Pirates and leads the team in scoring, with 16.3 points per game.On the plane headed to Puerto Rico. He recently received a one-game suspension and fined $1500 for illegal contact with an elbow.
Conklin joins a quality list of NBL players that have performed for the Pirates, including Johnson, James Ennis (2014) Mark Worthington (2011) and is highlighted by Shawn Redhage and Kevin Lisch, who shared a Championship with the Pirates in 2013. Lisch was named Finals MVP in his last campaign with the Pirates, and is due to return in the next fortnight.
